Non-Stop! The presses lost any logic: they were no longer measured according to hunger, or specific times. once every random, large, number of presses - the pigeons' behavior became extreme: they stood right next to the button and pressed it repeatedly until they got exhausted. When food was distributed every 20 presses of the button - that’s right, the pigeons learnt and counted approximately as many presses as required.īut one pattern towered above all in the intensity at which it affected the pigeons: when food was distributed at random - i.e. When food was distributed only in the certain time intervals, the pigeons learned the time intervals and buy some wondrous biological clock new the exact times they had to press the button to get food.

Playing around with the parameters, Skinner discovered some amazing facts: when food was distributed each time the button was pressed, the pigeons learnt to press the button only when they were hungry. the variables that were manipulated - were the conditions that caused food to be distributed. The pigeons were placed in containers, where food was distributed upon the press of a button. Skinner was using pigeons to study how much they can be taught. One name rose above all the turmoil of that era: Burrhus Frederic Skinner. the newly-born science of psychology was fragmented into several smaller areas of study: How do organisms learn? How do organisms respond under different conditions? How do organisms evolve? And just how much of it is purely genetic? And perhaps the most relevant question of all to society as we live it today: just how much, and how, can organisms' behaviors be manipulated? The numbers of individuals who contributed here is far larger than the first entrepreneurs in Europe. This became a global storm. It was a new world, filled with exciting new prospects. Today, we take for granted many things that didn’t exist at the start of last century: psychological defense mechanisms, the term psychosomatic, the science of “placebo”, and first and foremost - notion that talking to someone about your problems can help - all these were a product of Freud’s, and many of his contemporary peers’, studious work.įurther on during the 20th century, psychology did its best to become “a science”: people who were moved by the works of Freud and his peers were intent on making the psychological study of humans as scientific and methodic as possible… Thus was born behavioral psychology: the scientific study of all biological organisms' measurable behaviors, and the quantifiable patterns underlying them. Freud had stumbled unto a miracle: the mind has a metaphysical connection to the body. They were only resolved when some psychological issues came to light through conversation, session after session. Some of the patients that Freud received had physical ailments that refused any and all forms of treatment. Eventually he invented serendipitously what is in all the bases of all forms of psychotherapy: the analysis of the human psyche through conversation. People came to him with crippling problems, that more and more seemed like an enigma to him. As a neurologist, he accepted patients with physical ailments and did his best to help them. Freud was a neurologist, he didn’t even study the human psyche, because no such studies existed at the time at all. Sigmund Freud acted in the 1920s in Vienna.
