#NAS NEW ALBUM REVIEW SERIES#
Magic in my eyes is on the same caliber as King’s Disease II & only increases my anticipation for the 3rd installment of the series even more. “Dedicated” then finishes off the album with an incredible 2-parter about devoting his life to this shit. The song “Wave Gods” with A$AP Rocky finds the 2 on top of an organ & some dusty drums to get charmingly boastful while the penultimate track “The Truth” makes me so happy calling out people on their bluff. Meanwhile on “Hollywood Gangsta”, we have Nas detailing being on top & surprising listeners with a bit of a quirky groove to the beat leading into the drumless “Wu is for the Children” talking about the special kind of things in life. “Ugly” incorporates some wavy synth melodies to detail some hardships & to confirm King’s Disease III is indeed in the works, but then “40-16 Building” is pretty much a glorious sequel to “Rare Form” off his last album. “Speechless” is an unsettling opener to the whole album talking about getting his weight & safe up whereas “Meet Joe Black” takes things into boom bap territory advising not to fuck with him. King’s Disease earned Esco his first Grammy & the sequel that dropped over the summer was more superior in terms of quality, but are finishing off 2021 by dropping Magic. But for almost 2 years now, Nas has been working exclusively with Hit-Boy & both of them are a good fit for each other. Then there was the Kanye West-produced NASIR & The Lost Tapes II, which I felt like they were fine additions to his catalogue even though the overall consensuses were polarizing.

I also wanna include stillmatic, The Lost Tapes, God’s Son & Life is Good. Nas is no longer struggling on the streets, he’s at the top, on the throne, and when he’s rapping from that perspective it feels much m. For those who’re living under a rock, his first 2 albums illmatic & It Was Written are widely acknowledged as some of the greatest in hip hop history. When Nas heads back into the purely magisterial, kingly vibe on Store Run, a perfectly placed soul sample underneath, the Tony Montana comparisons feel more apt. Even though it has one weak feature, i’m not gonna hold that against Nas and i bang every track start to finish with every spin and with every visit i find some new Nas bars that make me go “URGH” with a scewface. Score: 10/10 I’m sure we all agree that this is the Nas album we have all been wishing for. The last track titled ‘Dedication’ ends the project on a more jazzy chill vibe with a ‘Dilla’ type beat and ‘Nas’ gracefully expresses he has dedicated his life to the game and rightly so, he has! “Wave Gods” isn’t a bad track but the feature could of been a lot better as I think Preemo’s beat deserved more, even though ‘Nas’ does his thing, someone else would of done the beat justice along side him. ‘The Truth’ is the truth and we all ‘Nas’ was dubbed the truth. Especially in the hook where ‘Nas’ acknowledges that his fans need that old ‘Nas’ ish from time to time “special like my classics, special like my listeners who have attachments, to my old style and won’t let me pass it’’. The rhyme scheme ‘Nas’ using on this track is unreal and damn this is the sort of ish that put ‘Nas’ as one of the goats. ‘Wu Is For The Children’ will quench a dry mofos thirst if your a WU fan or a die hard ‘Nas’ fan.

The samples are hit with FX to give it a wobble with some Chorus and maybe some distortion and Saturation in there too. ‘Hollywood Gangsta’ has a more of a new school sound but that’s not to say it’s a bad thing though as it still has the beat. It’s the kinda track you go back to and find another dope line with every new listen. ’40-16 Building’ jumps right back in to the street shit and don’t get much more New York than a beat with chopped horns but, the ferocious rhymes from ‘Nas’ are what really makes it New York. ‘Meet Joe Black’ is an astonishing track and i never use that term loosely. From the big synth bass to the hook ‘‘I’m not the one to go wack, f**k around meet Joe Black” ish is just insane and with the old school crunchy snare and ‘Nas’ spitting some real gutter ish it is a big contender for track of the year and its gonna be hard to topple this for real. ‘Ugly’ is a track that might get overlooked due to it not being as rugged with the production but damn when you analyse the lyrics man it’s so powerful and the whole Metaphor being these streets are ugly and ain’t nothing pretty.
